About the programme:
This has been designed to offer a flexible management programme for developing engineering managers. As a new or aspiring line manager, with the Fundamentals of engineering management programme you have the opportunity to choose to attend the training programme only, or undertake the CMI Level 3 qualification. Attend this programme to boost your confidence in stepping up to your first line management role. You can choose to attend the modules only, or work towards the CMI qualification.
What does the qualification route entail?
If you choose to attend the qualification route you’ll be studying towards the CMI Level 3 certificate in first line management. Upon completion of the training, you’ll be required to complete assignments in two modules to demonstrate that you have understood and can apply the key concepts. The number of assignments you’ll undertake depends on your starting point as exemptions exist for delegates registered with the Engineering Council.

This programme is designed for new and aspiring managers. Typical delegates have undertaken their first line management role in the last 12 months or are seeking formal management training to support their development.
Modules and learning paths
This programme requires attendees to select an appropriate learning pathway. Delegates who are professionally registered with the Engineering Council receive exemptions against some modules.
Which modules should I attend?
If you want to study for the CMI Level 3 certificate in first line management, you’ll need to undertake an assessment for the Performance Management module and one other module of your choice. You must attend both mandatory modules and at least one optional module.
New engineering manager, 2 days – Mandatory: This course explores the challenges that line managers face. You’ll be challenged to consider how you set objectives, delegate and motivate your team.
Performance management and appraisal skills, 1 day or virtual – Mandatory: This course explores how you get the best out of your team. You’ll be covering appraisals, conflict and objective setting.
Communication & influencing, 2 days – Optional: This course will help you communicate with your team. You’ll learn how to work with difficult individuals and tailor your communication to the recipient.
Applying ethical principles, 1 day – Optional: This module has been designed to explore the ethical issues engineers face every day and increase your ability to deal with moral complexity.
